RUSSIA / CIS CONTENT INDUSTRY: FACTS AND FIGURES

Russia/CIS market is in the world’s top 10 in terms of cinema theatre attendance/box office (BO is over 1 billion USD in 2017), Europe No. 1 in terms of cinema attendance (over 213 million).

The new multiplex annual growth rate is world’s second fastest (after China) with over 500 new screens opened in Russia/CIS in 2017! There are more over 5000 modern digital screens in operation in Russia alone, not counting CIS countries, where new multiplex growth rate is even higher than in Russia.

In 2016-2017 over 450 new screens were opened in Russia thanks to direct subsidies by Federal Government via Russian Cinema Fund to regional cinemas in small towns for digitization and overall modernization, with few hundred more to follow in 2018. The federal funding for cinemas is about 45 million euro over the three years. It is announced by the Ministry on Culture that the total of 1000 new screens will have been opened by the end of 2018 thanks to direct federal subsidies. Besides federal funding, various regional funding programs become available to modernize cinemas and install cinema exhibition equipment in some cultural establishments.

It is estimated, that television in Russia/CIS brings more than 1 billion USD annually to rights holders of films and TV content.

VoD market growth has been truly outstanding in the recent years. Estimated payments to rights holders by VoD providers is now over 130 million USD annually.
